How Journaling Improves Mental Clarity

Every single day I journal. Yeah, that's right, I don't miss a day. Well, ever since this date at least.

Starting June 15th of this year, I started keeping a digital journal. This is something that keeps me centered and allows me to reflect on how my days are going consistently.

When looking into my notes template you can see how I bucket my life into a daily highlight and 3 sections.

Why do I do this? Well, the simple reason is that I like talking about my feelings. I'm almost not kidding lol. It is the case that I like to get my thoughts and feels out on paper. I think it's a huge reason behind why I get so many things done and how I seldom leave thoughts on in my head.

My journal is also a place where I capture ideas that I didn't even know that I had. As David Allen puts it, "Your mind is for having ideas, not holding them."

Who here has experienced an amazing idea occur to only lose it in a single moment. This is something that used to occur to me often as a content creator who did not journal and who had systems with a lot of friction. The lack of letting my ideas flow out daily and not having a place for jotting down ideas is what used to hold me back.

Journaling is also a space where I can destress and let out all of my frustrations that occur throughout the day without any consequences. As I've explored Stoicism and philosophy in the past few months I've found out that I have more control over my thoughts and actions than I had previously thought.

When reading Ryan Holiday's new book "Courage is Calling: Fortune Favors the Brave" last week I read this pretty profound quote:

Even the ancient Stoics, supposedly the master of all emotion, conceded that we’ll have involuntary actions. To being attacked. They had a word for these immediate provocative impressions of things: Phantasia

There have been so many times in my life where I felt an immediate and irrational reaction to a situation. However, being aware of when this occurs and using a simple practice like journaling has helped me improve my temperance and kept me calm by having a healthy outlet.

If you're looking for a healthy outlet this year, I recommend trying out a physical or electronic journal. While I may type my feelings out you may find that all you need is a pen and paper to improve your mood and jot down some great ideas.
