Being a Student of Life

Anyone who stops learning is old, whether at twenty or eighty. Anyone who keeps learning stays young. The greatest thing in life is to keep your mind young. - Henry Ford

On a daily basis, I have been trying to live with this quote in mind. It really just keeps me happy and healthy to learn on a consistent basis. What I like about this quote the most is that Henry Ford is right in the sense that there are so many different things that you can learn in the world and if you consistently try your best to be a lifelong learner you're going to find novelty in life. Interestingly enough there is a large connection between novelty and the flow state.

For those of you that are familiar, there's an American-Hungarian psychologist, Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi who first peddled the flow state concept. The flow state is described as “the mental state in which a person performing some activity is fully immersed in a feeling of energized focus, full involvement, and enjoyment in the process of the activity”. In the flow state, you're disconnected from time and you're consistently hammering out work and it makes you feel fulfilled.

I think learning consistently for me in the last year and reading books all the time has really helped me get to the point where I’ve learned these new concepts and these new, different ways of being productive or thinking about things in a different way in helping me improve my mental state.

The novelty lets me get into the flow state more consistently than I would otherwise. That's why I think being a lifelong student is important. Being a student of life and learning how you're doing on a daily basis is important as well.

We go through the motions in life if we aren’t careful. I'm not going to cast any aspersions on people who do that, however, after living a life with a fair amount of my life unintentionally I can speak from experience when I say that it’s worse than being intentional Intentional living gives you a unique opportunity to open yourself to a world of constant enjoyment because if there's anything awesome about being a person who gets to experience new things it's that novelty is unique to you.

Any new thing you learn, you interpret in your own way. On top of that something awesome I found is going back and reading old books. When you read a book, you're going to find that you see things in a new light every time. As you grow in life and keep attacking it with the student frame of mind this will be more clear as your reading has more awareness and intention to it.

Reading these books again will help you find there are constantly new things to learn that can lead to more novelty and trigger the flow state. The increased creativity from the flow state will lead you to amazing and happy places in your life. Once you get to the point where you're learning so often that your days fly by it’s really fulfilling and joyful.

I hope each of you can find joy in whatever it is you are learning in your life right now and you continue to do so and find happiness and novelty in almost everything you do.

Have an awesome week!
