Consistency of performance is essential. You don't have to be exceptional every week but at a minimum, you need to be at a level that even on a bad day you get points on the board. - Sean Dyche
I am nothing if not consistent with my life and my work. On a consistent basis, I’ve been working at creating a brand for nearly 3 years and I’ve seen it pay off time and time again as the years have gone on. However, there are many days when I simply do not feel like putting in the work to make things happen.
This especially comes with parts of the business I don’t enjoy like writing the YouTube descriptions for videos or doing the SEO for a number of different videos and pages I have scattered across my brand. I really just don’t like the small detailed text required to make this have a better chance of being shown to the masses if they search a certain keyword.
For me, the main thing to remember however is that doing a little bit of the kind of work I dislike every day ends up allowing me to do the actual work I enjoy every day. An easy way for me to remind myself of the importance of the things I don’t enjoy doing is to remind myself that it allows me to do what I love and that is creating content.
This resistance to doing the unenjoyable but important thing can be found in many facets of life. It can be in your workout routine when you wake up in the morning, or even in basic social situations where you don’t feel like putting in basic effort with loved ones after a hard workday.
For me, I always go back to remembering something basic but powerful. It is not about doing something life-changing every day, it is about doing something every day even the bare minimum in order to push your boundaries and get to that next level.
One of the most overused but effective lines from James Clear’s book Atomic Habits reads as follows:
If you master continuous improvement and get 1% better each day for one year, you'll end up 37 times better by the time you're done. - James Clear
Yeah... that is POWERFUL. If you get 1% better every day regarding your income, exercise, eating, or sleep habits you will become a completely different person by the beginning of next year. Take a good hard look at any inspiring year-long challenge on YouTube and you’ll see what I mean. Sometimes all it takes is a little bit of energy in order to make huge strides towards your goals.
I want you all to try and remember this the next time you face high levels of resistance in your life to do a large task. Start small and just do something instead of nothing. If you do nothing for the day to move your life needle forward then you will have stayed in the exact same place for 24 hours. Instead, move the needle a millimeter instead of an inch for the day, and guess what you are doing? You’re still moving that needle while others let it stay still.
Have an awesome week!
