“Force yourself to find something beautiful in everything you do and you will only do beautiful things.” - Meir Ezra
For a month this past summer I lived right next to the beach. Well, right down the road I should say. While it was a mere 5-minute walk away, many people living on the same street most likely did not take advantage of the beautiful beach in the concrete jungle that is Chicago.
As for myself, I spent 10ish out of the 30 days I was downtown this summer at the beach. For me this ratio was amazing and I found myself enjoying the weather, playing plenty of Spikeball, and diving into the lake to cool off. In a previous summer, I may not have hit this high of a beach-to-day ratio.
The larger analogy I see in this scenario is that many people tend to miss the beautiful “beaches” and perks of the life they have. Sure, Chicago can be a desolate, cold, and brutal place in the winter and spring but that’s only one side of it. Most people tend to ignore how amazing Chicago is in the summer when they complain about its inadequacies.
Chicago has the unique ability to be a place of beauty and depressiveness not only when comparing seasons but also when comparing your mindset towards it. I’ve spent some time in Chicago during the nicer months of the year prior to this year but did not take advantage of its perks nearly as much as I should have.
“Finding your beach” then should be seen as a choice you make on a daily basis. I’m not going to act like life is easy, it isn’t. Chicago sure as heck has its fair share of problems. HOWEVER, there is always a beach that can be found in any negative situation. Whether it be your one-on-one time with your boss at the job you dislike or taking a walk during the workday at that very same job, there is always a beach to be found.
It may take you a 5-minute walk but your beach is right down the corner. The effort it takes to get there takes some time and foresight but it can be found. I often found myself disliking the 9-5 grind while I dreamed of becoming a full-time content creator until I came to a great realization. The current situation I have with my job is pretty great. I make solid money, I have amazing coworkers, and I’m pretty dang good at what I do. All of these are little “beaches” I have found while I wait to take the ultimate leap into self-employment one day.
I decided to start enjoying the journey rather than begrudgingly going through the hike that is daily life. Sure the beach may be down the road, but it can always be found if you work up the effort to round that corner.
As a side note, I’d like to thank every coworker, friend, and family member for supporting me on my journey toward finding my dream job. Whether it be full-time content creation or growing my career in digital marketing, I have a really supportive group of people around me and I’m very grateful for it.
Have an awesome week!
