"Never let the future disturb you. You will meet it, if you have to, with the same weapons of reason which today arm you against the present." - Marcus Aurelius
For me, this quote has always meant not to worry about the future. For some reason today it makes me feel not only without worry but exceptionally optimistic about 2022.
With everything that has been going on in the world in the past few years, I feel that the art of being Stoic and only focusing on what you can control has been more important than ever in keeping me in this mindset.
The fact of the matter is, I cannot focus on the things that happen outside of my own life if I want to keep my life momentum going.
Other lands are not my concern. The fortunes of the world will rise and fall, but here in this kingdom, we will endure.
Alright alright alright, I know what you're thinking, "Did you just quote The Hobbit? To try and make a point?". YEAH I DID. And the funny thing is Thranduil is really in the wrong during the context of this exchange with his fellow elf in this movie.
Thranduil is making this argument from the viewpoint of a king who is only focusing on his kingdom even though there are evil Orcs and dark sorcerers making a large negative impact on Middle Earth. His choice to isolate the elves actually would have a negative impact on the world we live in.
But... this is real life. This is the world we live in. We are (most likely) not the Kings of one of the most powerful armies in the world. The only thing we are the king of is our mind. While the fortunes and fortitude of the world may rise and fall we cannot let it affect us.
The truth of the matter is, the only way for us to make a large impact on our lives, our families, and those we care about is by focusing on ourselves and what we can control. We live in a world wherein in order to make a huge impact you have to be incredibly focused and for the past few months, I've really felt that to be the case for me.
I have been happy with my ability to do this because as I look forward to 2022, I feel more than ever in my life that I am in control of my own destiny. While I know that's kind of uhhh... well it's a little hypocritical of Stoic philosophy, I truly do feel that way. Mainly because I know that things will happen that are outside of my control, but more than ever I will be able to assess the situation from a point of view that will make me benefit from any sort of positive or negative situation.
This was a bit of a rambly newsletter but it's all just to say, focus on what you can control and be excited for 2022. I sure am and I hope all of you are too.
