How to export a CSV from your bank

Every bank words it a little differently, but the steps are close to these.

  1. Sign in to your bank’s website on a computer. If you can’t find an export in the app, the website is the next place to look.
  2. Open the account or card your subscriptions come out of, then its transactions or activity.
  3. Look for Download or Export. Pick CSV, which some banks call a spreadsheet or comma separated file. Skip PDF, OFX and QFX.
  4. Choose the longest range it offers, ideally the last 12 months. Six months finds monthly charges; a full year also catches yearly renewals.
  5. Drop the file into the checkup. Pay from more than one card? Run each export on its own.

What it can’t know

  • It finds patterns. It can’t see what you use. A charge you rely on and one you forgot look the same in a bank export, so the Keep and Cancel calls are yours.
  • It needs three charges to call something weekly or monthly, and two matching charges for every three months or yearly. A short export misses yearly renewals.
  • Several things billed through one app store, phone bill or bundle can show up as a single line.
  • Yearly costs are estimates: the current typical charge times how often it repeats. Charges that may have stopped aren’t in the total.
  • It doesn’t cancel anything. You cancel with each company; the checklist helps you keep track.
